A biopsy is a cancer diagnosis procedure that involves the surgical removal (or “aspiration”) of a small amount of suspicious tissue and/or fluid to determine whether a tumor, lesion or nodule is malignant (cancerous) or benign. With the advanced training and in-depth experience of our interventional radiologists, and the state-of-the-art technology for image-guided procedures at our client facilities, Progressive Physician Associates can perform needle biopsies—a fast, minimally invasive procedure—on an outpatient basis.
Common applications include evaluating lesions or tumors in the breast, thyroid gland, prostate, lung, chest, bone, digestive system and abdominal organs. Through a very small incision in the skin, a tiny, hollow needle is inserted under image guidance to remove a tissue sample for examination by a pathologist. Needle biopsies generally take about an hour to complete and, depending on the location of the tumor, frequently do not require an overnight hospital stay.
